Although we have already discussed the advantages and benefits of dancing before, today we are going to talk about the benefits of partner dancing. As a sport, dance is heart-healthy, works as a natural anti-depressant, improves our social skills and coordination, and helps our brains.  Imagine if we add to all these advantages the ones of practising it with a partner on the dance floor! We have put some of these advantages together so that those of you who are still hesitant will be encouraged to discover all that partner dancing (such as ballroom and Latin dances) can offer.

1. Social skills

In a world that is more connected than ever, we seem to find it harder to connect with ourselves and with others. Partner dancing helps us to meet other people, to open up, to gain self-confidence and self-assurance, to lose our shame and shyness and, consequently, to improve our social skills.

2. Flexibility and endurance

As with individual dancing, partner dancing is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that helps us to lose weight and treat ailments such as hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol or diabetes. However, partner dancing also requires movements that sometimes demand more flexibility and endurance work than individual dancing, so, on some occasions, we will be exercising x2!

3. Connection and empathy

Dancing allows us to discover ourselves, it is a journey into our body and mind. When partner dancing, we go on this journey with our dance partner. Have you ever seen a couple of dancers performing and thought that they were deeply connected and it gave you goose bumps?

Connecting with our dance partner is the most effective way to improve our self-confidence and self-esteem.

4. Team spirit

Group activities imply that everyone in the team has to work together to make the final result work. This feeling of belonging is extremely beneficial because it makes us feel part of something, which helps to motivate and reinforce us.

5. Reflexes and agility

When dancing as a couple we must synchronise with each other’s movements. There are times when a pair of dancers become one and their movements mirror those of their partner. This requires a mental effort that will improve our attention span and responsiveness.

6. Satisfaction

The gratification of working hard with your dance partner and learning a new difficult step, of being able to get the choreography right…. The satisfaction and happiness after a job well done is multiplied when shared with someone else, just as the difficult moments are made easier to bear.

Feeling understood and expressing with our body beyond what we can with our words, tuning into someone and feeling close and in harmony with them…. The list goes on and on.
